Montmartre, « le Village » : la plupart des grands bohèmes ont quitté ce quartier après le déclenchement de la Première Guerre mondiale. Pendant la Belle Époque (fin du 19e siècle jusqu'à la 1re guerre mondiale) de nombreux artistes de renom ont vécu et travaillé à Montmartre de 1872 à 1914, les loyers étaient bas et l'atmosphère propice à l'expression. Le célèbre moulin à vent de Pierre-Auguste Renoir, le Moulin de la Galette, se trouve au sommet du quartier. Picasso a peint l'un de ses chefs-d'œuvre les plus importants, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, alors qu'il y résidait ; Vincent van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri Matisse et Edgar Degas ont tous travaillé à Montmartre et y ont puisé leur inspiration. Deux églises remarquables méritent le détour : le Sacré-Cœur et Saint-Pierre de Montmartre. L'altitude élevée du quartier – une véritable colline – offre une vue imprenable sur Paris.

Montmartre, "the Village": Most of the great bohemians left this neighborhood after the outbreak of the First World War. During the Belle Époque (late 19th century until the First World War), many renowned artists lived and worked in Montmartre from 1872 to 1914; rents were low and the atmosphere conducive to expression. Pierre-Auguste Renoir's famous windmill, the Moulin de la Galette, sits at the top of the neighborhood. Picasso painted one of his most important masterpieces, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, while living here; Vincent van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri Matisse, and Edgar Degas all worked in Montmartre and drew inspiration from it. Two notable churches are worth a visit: the Sacré-Cœur and Saint-Pierre de Montmartre. The neighborhood's high altitude—a veritable hill—offers breathtaking views of Paris.
